January is a great time to set goals for the coming year. Take some time this week to consider what you achieved in 2018 and what you want to accomplish in 2019.
Here are a few ways you can set yourself up to achieve your goals in 2019:
- First, set goals you actually want to accomplish. One way to figure out what you really desire is to write up a long list of goals you wish to achieve. Write every idea that comes to mind - more than could be accomplished in a year. Then, circle the goals that inspire you and that you truly feel led to accomplish.
- Include big projects that you know you will want or will have to do. Creating a long list of goals that does not take into account the time it takes to accomplish those goals or projects is a recipe for disappointment. For example, if you have a goal that requires a large amount of your time in the fall, do not schedule another large project at the same time. Your year is likely to have some number of immovable obligations. Add those responsibilities to your list so you have a full picture of what you need to get done. Unforeseen commitments will also arise throughout the year, so leave yourself space for the inevitable, unexpected projects.
- Make a plan to accomplish your goals. Ask yourself what needs to happen in order for your dreams to become a reality. This is just another way of saying you need to map out the steps to reach the goal. Assign goals to specific time periods with fixed deadlines and pay attention to those deadlines as to not procrastinate.
- Create a system to review and update your goals. As the year progresses, you will need to adjust your plans. New projects may arise or existing projects may require more time than you realized. Consider a quarterly review to be sure you are on track and to adapt your goals as you go along.
Finally, celebrate your goals once they are achieved and thank those who have helped you along the way!
