This month, the American Academy of Pediatrics warned against the consequences related to tattoos and piercings. Researchers suggest that both parents and doctors should talk intentionally about the dangers of tattoos and piercings with teens and young adults. By starting the conversation early, teens are aware of the dangers before they are able to make decisions about tattoos and piercings when they turn 18 and become an adult.
Here are some things to talk about with your teen:
- Do not over estimate how easy it is to have a tattoo or piercing removed. Tattoos are meant to be permanent. They are also expensive and sometimes hard to remove.
- Unsanitary conditions or untrained staff can cause serious health issues. Some complications can include: Severe infections, allergic reactions and keloids (growth of extra scar tissue).
- Tattoos and piercings can negatively affect employability. In a 2014 survey of nearly 2700 people, 76% thought that tattoos and/or piercings had hurt their chances of getting a job, and 39% thought employees with tattoos and/or piercings reflect poorly on their employers.
- Tattoos and piercings have a connection with high risk behaviors. Know who your teen spends time with and talk with them about making good choices.
