Parents in Fairfax County are continuing to protest newly proposed sex education policies. According to an article by Fox5, the new curriculum would expand lessons on the different types of contraception available to students, change curriculum language from "biological sex" to "sex assigned at birth" and would include education on PrEP, an HIV prevention drug not yet approved for individuals under the age of 18.
Those opposed to the new curriculum believe that it goes too far and does not teach students about the health issues associated with pre-marital sexual activity. Concerned parents have also voiced their concern that abstinence is not addressed and should be presented as an option to students.
Last Thursday, May 10, the school board heard from parents on both sides of the issue. Public comment is open until June 8 when the board will vote on whether or not to adopt the new plan.
