Last week, a grand jury in Texas indicted Netflix on felony charges of promotion of "lewd visual material depicting a child" in the movie Cuties. In Texas, a conviction of this charge carries a jail sentence with it, but because they indicted the company rather than individuals, Netflix would have to pay a fine.
The film features a group of 11-year-old girls doing many sexually explicit actions on camera. Throughout the film, these 11-year-olds dance and move provocatively, wear revealing clothing and even sext. This is all while the camera pans slowly over their bodies.
Netflix has not responded to any media requests for comment. The only comment they've made regarding Cuties came after their original poster was deemed to be "overtly sexual". Netflix tweeted, "We're deeply sorry for the inappropriate artwork that we used for Mignonnes/Cuties. It was not OK, nor was it representative of this French film which won an award at Sundance." And yet, they continue to promote the film and have it available for viewing on their platform.
Use your voice and resources to hold Netflix accountable. If you haven't yet, consider ending your financial support of Netflix's immoral programming by cancelling your Netflix subscription and be sure to let them know why you are unsubscribing. Let's hope that this grand jury in Texas sends a clear message to Netflix that we cannot, and will not, support such despicable and immoral content for ourselves or our children.
