We live in a world where the term "pro-life" is so often equated with political affiliation. It is hard for many people to have a conversation about being pro-life without a heated debate about politics ensuing. As Christians, how are we called to respond when others are being uncivil? Dr. Greg Austen, Executive Director of Church Outreach and Engagement for Care Net, advises we look to these Bible verses for guidance:
- "Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person." (Colossians 4:6)
- "But in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect." (1 Peter 3:15)
- "To speak evil of no one, to avoid quarreling, to be gentle, and to show perfect courtesy toward all people." (Titus 3:2)
- "A servant of the Lord must not quarrel but must be kind to everyone, be able to teach, and be patient with difficult people. Gently instruct those who oppose the truth. Perhaps God will change those people's hearts, and they will learn the truth. (2 Timothy 2:24-25)
When we encounter incivility, we must always respond with truth in kindness. This will give the best possible face to our pro-life convictions.
